Abraham Lincoln- Was the leader for the Union being the president he grew up taking care of himself teaching himself how to read, he married to Mary Todd and proved early in the White House that he was a great asset to the Union. Ulysses S Grant- Was known as the Hero of the Civil War he was the most acclaimed general in the Civil War, Grant had won lots of battles in the Civil War and was very popular in the U.S. Irvin McDowell- Abraham Lincoln appointed McDowell to lead the Union army at first, he wasn't the most popular leader as his plan in the First Bull Run turned into an embarrassing rout. George B. McClellan- Was a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran he was a superior troop trainer and supply technicain, but he was not an agrresive fighter as he didn't completely end the War of Antietam and didn't finish off Robert E. Lee. George G. Meade- Was appointed the new leader of the Union army as McCellan was a West Point graduate and a Mexican War Veteran but apart from McClellan was an Indian fighter. He had proved himself at Gettysburg but Lincoln went to find a new leader. Ambrose Burnside- Was a West Point graduate, Mexican War veteran, a tailor, and inventor by trade. He was the new leader of the Union army after Meade, he didn't want to be the new leader but wanted to put in his most effort nut the horrible defeat at Fredericksburg doomed him. Joseph Hooker- After Ambrose's horrible tradgic defeat he was demoted and Hooker was the new leader of the Union, he was a West Point graduate, Mexican War Veteran, and rancher. He was the hero in the Mexican War and his nickname " Fighting Joe" stayed with him even through Civl War, Hooker was a very well cared for and fancy gentleman, but despite his finery he was also humiliated but at the Battle of Chancellorsville. William T. Sherman- Sherman was one of the most capable generals favorited by Grant, he was also a West Point graduate, Mexican War veteran, a lawyer, and a banker, Sherman was plowing through the Carolinas and Georgia and forced Robert E. Jefferson Davis- Was the president of the Confederacy and led the South, he grew up in Mississppi and also attended West Point and along with many a Mexican War veteran, he was a very intense person, hated politics, and didn't want to be the president of the Confederacy. He was never able to form a strong single nation out of 11 states in the South Robert E. Lee- Lee was a West Point graduate and also a Veteran of the Mexican War, and engineer by trade. He was apposed to slavery and secession. He was asked by Lincoln to join the Union army he declined because he was very loyal to the South and didn't want to fight against Virginia. P.G.T Beauregard- A West Point graduate, Mexican War veteran, and a engineer by trade. He had gave the first order to take the first shot in the Civil War. Albert S. Johnston- A Texan and one of the most finest military soilders. He was a West Point Graduate, Mexican War veteran along with many, and a farmer by trade, but the sad truth he wasn't a good farmer. He was the second highest ranked Confederate Solider, Lee gave him command of the West of the Confederacy. He was a ruthless fighter but had bleed out after being shot and continuing to battle. Thomas Stonewall Jackson- Was a West Point Graduate, Mexican War veteran, and an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute. Jackson was the commander of the First Bull Run, He fought in many battles and was victorious and that's where he got his nickname "Stonewall" which characterized his personality. J.E.B Stuart- A West Point Graduate, Mexican War veteran, and a career military man, he led the Calvary corps of Lee's army. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. Nathan Bedford Forrest- He was uneducated but was not illiterate, he was a farmer, horse and cattle trader, and a relator by trade. Even though he was uneducated he was one of America's greatest tactical minds. George Pickett- Was a West Point Graduate and Mexican War veteran along with many of the other men on this list. He commanded an infantry or foot soliders under Lee. Pickett is some to blame on the Battle of Gettysburg with his Pickett's Charge. |
